2013: Split Eurovision Results All In One Place!

Since 2009, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has included a hybrid system of both international jurors and televoters to calculate the results. From 2016 onwards the split in the jury and televote result has been presented as a part of the results, however in the years before that this was not the case. This means for many years the split results can only be observed and compared via multiple web searches. This is particularly the case since the EBU upgraded the official eurovision.tv website. Links to data files on many pages have not been transferred over and the whole ordeal can be rather frustrating! So save yourself the hassle! In this article I aim to compile all the known split result data until present.

2013

Probably the most infamous set of split results ever, allegations of bribery and mass SIM card buying by delegations broke around the time of this contest. As a result, the 2013 split results are incomplete, showing only jury and televote rankings rather than their allocated points. We will do our best to piece together what we actually know happened.

“Ireland has an average jury rank of 16,21 and an average televoting rank of 14,62 in the Grand Final, but only made it into the top-10 in three countries.”

European Broadcasting Union via https://eurovision.tv/story/split-results-of-eurovision-2013-revealed

Why This Is A Pain For Our Graphs!

As the EBU made clear themselves, these results don’t show where countries just missed out on receiving points. This is particularly a problem when trying to convert to the modern voting system. Say Ireland had come 10th in one country’s televote but the jury knocked them out of the top ten in that country when its scores were amalgamated. This would mean that Ireland would not receive any points in the old system but would in the new. This can be visualised in that the combined average rank for Ireland 21 is a good few places higher than their actual outcome. In other words there is a lot that may potentially have changed had the modern voting system been used, the issue is without knowing the scale of disagreement in individual countries we have no means of working this out!

*Jury/Televote position from averages is simply a prediction of how the jury/televote might have ordered the songs based on their average rankings. As Eurovision uses a First Past The Post System, this many not have translated into the actual positions when each countries’ points were allocated.

**Taking an average of the average ranks is pretty meaningless, in that we already don’t know how well the initial averages correspond with points. However, I have done so purely to demonstrate the countries who would have been likely to have been impacted by a change in the voting system to a separated jury and televote score.

***These ties were not split on the official EBU results. Eurovoix did however have these ties broken but where they got that information from or whether it is still accessible is unclear. If you know, or work with Eurovoix please let us know!
