It’s the Birth of a New Age!
Welcome to the first weekly update here at ESC Essence, where we discuss the main events of the past week in regards to the Eurovision Song Contest and look ahead to what might occur over the coming week. So gather round, put on the kettle and unwind, as I break down the events of the week.
First rehearsals for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest are underway in Rotterdam, as delegations from 39 countries around Europe (and the world) prepare to represent their nations through song. All acts participating in the first semi final have now completed their first rehearsal (you can see my initial reaction to those here) and over the week rehearsals are set to continue.
The rumour mills have also been in full motion, as San Marino showed up in the Netherlands without their well-known rapper Flo Rida. If you thought the will he/won’t he do Eurovision discussion was over though, think again. Senhit was seen rehearsing with a stand in rapper – rather than using a hologram and pre-recorded vocals, implying that Flo Rida may well still be on the cards. This story has even reached the metro newspaper’s attention. However, it remains to be seen what will happen or even if he will be able to travel to the Netherlands in time.
With it being the rehearsal period, the bookmakers are also shifting their odds now. Most bookmakers are now predicting France will win but considering bookies second-place Malta has had their rehearsal and France has not, will they stay this way heading into Eurovision week?
Eurovision is still on course to have a live audience, albeit much reduced and for those of you who live in the Netherlands and are planning on attending the contest, I wish you a safe journey to Rotterdam over the coming days. The contest is fast approaching so get your flags, stroopwafles and bubbly ready, we will soon know the winner of the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest.
What did you think of the rehearsals so far? Who is your favourite to win? And what do you think of all the speculation that surrounds this year’s contest? Join the discussion, leave a comment or quote tweet this article, I’d love to know what you think!
