Discover The Surprising Most Watched Eurovision Songs

Knowing which Eurovision song is the most popular is a complex question. Do you consider physical sales, digital sales, streaming, radio plays etc? Factor in that some songs have had 60 years of time to spread or originated in countries with significantly larger populations than others and even the notion of even understanding why these songs are popular becomes complex. Depending on how you approach this topic, ultimately the outcomes will be very different.

So with all this in mind, lets take a dive into the most played uploads of Eurovision songs on YouTube. Why? Well whilst it only shows part of the picture regarding “popularity”, it is interesting to see which songs have resonated with YouTubers over the past decade and a half(ish). I will only be considering uploads to the official YouTube channel and to make things fair I will consider the music videos (NF uploads used as music videos are counted here too), semi-final performances and grand final performances separately.

So lets get cracking!

Interesting points:

• All the winners of the contest since 2006 (with the exception of Running Scared – Azerbaijan, 2011) appear in the table
• The only non-qualifying song to make the cut is Slovakia, 2010’s Horehronie
• The song with the most combined views on the table is Israel’s 2018 entry, Toy
• Harking back to the 2004 contest (the earliest that the EBU has full broadcasting rights for) Greece’s entry Shake It, Turkey’s For Real, Serbia & Montenegro’s Lane Moje and Ukraine’s Wild Dances are the oldest songs to make the list
• Of the 52 countries which have competed at Eurovision, 49 countries have competed since 2004 (and therefore hypothetically could have made this list). Of these, 35 countries had at least one entry on the list. Missing out were: Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, San Marino, Slovenia and the United Kingdom
• Despite the 2020 contest’s cancellation, Iceland’s 2020 entry Think About Things‘ music video was still popular enough to make the cut!
• Four artists have multiple appearances with different songs on the list: Daði og Gagnamagnið, Sergey Lazarev, SunStroke Project and Željko Joksimović
