How Good Is The Song?

The Artists

This song will get stuck in your head very quickly! As you would probably expect from Little Big who are known for their quirky and energetic numbers the song is sure to engage you and lift the energy in the room. Whilst the song is a good fit for Little Big in that sense, it is also a really good fit for Netta, who rose to fame with her Eurovision winning song “Toy”. Sure Moustache lacks the chicken noises that added so much personality (and controversy) to Toy but the subject matter of Moustache is very much in the Netta style. The song appears to challenge pre-conceived notions about body hair being and whether or not it is sexy (at least that’s what I took from the music video and lyrics). This would be very on brand for Netta, as Toy of course is that “gimmicky” seemingly lyrically shallow novelty song that actually contained much deeper connotations highlighting the mistreatment of women. In many ways the two artists styles fuse perfectly here as a result.

The Structure

Little Big take a fair chunk of the verse, whilst Netta sings the song’s main hook “I know, I know you like my moustache”. This works well over all, giving both Little Big and Netta their respective moments without having either overshadow the other. Whilst this hook may initially seem pretty cheesy and random, in the context of the wider song it does help to drive home the concept of body positivity. Do I really want to be singing that all day after the song has ended? Well no, it is super cheesy and could end up feeling annoying very quickly but it does help to add depth without making the song feel any less like a novelty song. What this song does well is play to the artist’s strengths as a result.

Commercial Success?

Re-listening is a key aspect to any song. For one, I’m not going to buy a song I don’t see myself listening to considerably. And if most people only listen once, a song will need a large audience to drive up streams. In MOUSTACHE’s case, I can see this song having appeal to be added to playlists (it certainly isn’t something I’d skip) but I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy this song but the lyrics and heavily produced sound are something I can only listen to so many times in a short timespan without getting sick of. Overall, I think it is a good single that very much fits into the artist’s existing discography’s but isn’t anything groundbreaking. It’s fun, catchy and on-brand – basically, there is a reason why the song is trending on YouTube!

Summary

It’s a fun song I’m sure to listen to again. Is it groundbreaking? Probably not, but it is great at what it is aiming to be – a fun pop hit (with a deeper meaning for good measure)! Ultimately it is held back by being just a tad too much for me.
