The Weekly Update (Week Commencing 10/08/2021)

There hasn’t been a weekly update in a while (sorry about that folks) because there has been a lot of working going on behind the scenes of the site. But we are back!

Benidorm Song Festival

The most exciting news in regards to the next Eurovision is the reveal of the Spanish delegations plans for selecting their song. That plan being to revive the Festival Internacional de la Canción de Benidorm. This historic contest has much in common with Eurovision, as both were originally inspired from Italy’s San Remo festival. However, unlike Eurovision and San Remo, the Benidorm Song Festival (as it is commonly known) was abandoned after it’s 2006 edition. With the two previously named festivals both having long-established tradition and legacy’s, its no wonder the Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española (RTVE) and the Valencian government are keen on reinstating the show to its glory. Alongside this mission of course, RTVE will be hoping to revive their Eurovison results by including the Spanish ticket to Eurovision 2022 as part of the winner’s prize.

Whether or not the festival will finally elevate Spain’s position in the Eurovision scoreboard remains to be seen but for Eurofans this can only be good news. We are getting a new song festival in February! It is sure to add significantly to the Eurovision calendar. One of the advantages of course for us fans, is that a new contest focusing on new artists is sure to help us all discover a vast array of music to enjoy, that we likely would have missed out on otherwise.

Eurovision 2006 HD

Talking about 2006… The high definition recording of Eurovision 2006 has been recovered from the archives and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have now uploaded it to the official ESC YouTube channel. If you have never watched it before or want to do a rewatch/ranking now is the perfect time to explore ESC 2006 with the extra sharpness transforming the show. In many ways it is quite fitting that after only the second rock winner of ESC was crowned, we finally are getting the first rock winners’ performance in full high definition.

Iggy Pop Meets Eurovision

The winner’s of Eurovision have also been busy of late. Eurovision 2021’s champion’s Måneskin have released a new version of their hit single I Wanna Be Your Slave, this time featuring rock legend Iggy Pop. It’s super impressive to see just how far the group have come in such a short period and whether the track is your cuppa tea or not, it is an impressive collaboration to have arranged so soon. Who knows what the future has in store for Måneskin but it certainly is exciting!

Eurofest

In complete contrast to the world we were in last year, events are beginning to go ahead again. For all you folks who have been beggin‘ (see what I did there (#cringe) for the latest Eurovision event, you are in luck. Eurofest is back with a live event and to make life even better none other than SuRie (Eurovision UK 2018) will be there!

Concerts

If that isn’t feasible for you (or maybe you want even more to attend) concert’s are also continuing to occur online.
